I just upgraded with a clean install of Win 7. The Microsoft Video and audio decoders show up as available in the DVD player. I selected those and set the DVD prefs to drive D:. Started the dvd and received the following error.

\"DVD initialization error: DVD_DIRECTORY. I can get the dvd to play in other apps so I know the Microsoft codecs work there. A while back you mentioned that after a clean install you had success with DVD playback but I forget what DVD software you recommended. What decoders are recommended and working well?

Thanks

I spent some time trying to use the Microsoft DVD codecs, but they did not work for me either. I don't remember the error now (it was more than a year ago). I think it was something related to audio (and video working) but I could be mistaken.

WinDVD version 8 gold edition should work. It works for me and others on Windows 7 and 8.

The Microsoft DVD codec is not included with Windows 8, so it would be of a limited use anyway.
